WORLD HIJAB DAY 2020 – UNITY IN DIVERSITY

In a short program during the flag ceremony, we celebrated the 8th World Hijab Day (WHD). This shows that the Bangsamoro Government is one, together with more than a hundred countries worldwide, in the observance of WHD.

The overall mission of WHD is to create a more peaceful world where global citizens respect each other. Particularly, WHD focuses on fighting bigotry, discrimination, and prejudice against Muslim women. This is most crucial in these times where Hijab is being banned in some countries while in other countries, Muslim women are being targeted and harassed verbally and physically. The brainchild of this movement was Nazma Khan, a New York resident, who came up with the idea as a means to foster religious tolerance and understanding by inviting non-Hijabi Muslims/Non-Muslims women to experience the hijab for one day (worldhijabday.com).

#FreeInHijab (#EmpoweredInHijab or #StrongInHijab) is the much needed hashtag for our current global situation where women in hijab are labeled by media as oppressed and symbolically imprisoned. Through this hashtag, women are encouraged to voice their choice of wearing the hijab; thus dispelling common misconceptions.” (Nazma Khan)

In view of this, the Bangsamoro Women Commission- BARMM is currently conducting a hijab donation drive. Anyone who has unused (or simply want to share) hijabs can donate the same to the donation box located at the said office. The same will be given to orphans, Madrasah and less fortunate girls and women who cannot afford to buy hijab.

‘And tell the believing women to lower their gaze, and protect their chastity and not to reveal their adornment except what is apparent and to draw their veils all over their bosoms (or bodies, faces, neck)..’ (The Holy Qur’an, 24:31)
